Gimme Shelter – Movie Review

Gimme Shelter
Gimme Shelter – PG-13
Release Date: Thu 17 Oct 2013

Vanessa Hudgens had an amazing year in 2013. After a standout performance in the underrated The Frozen Ground, Hudgens plays a very strong lead in Gimme Shelter. Her character plays a pregnant teenager, herself the result of a teenage pregnancy. She begins the film leaving her drug-addled, abusive mother played perfectly by Rosario Dawson to try to reconnect with her distant, wealthy father. The father (played by Brendan Fraser) has a wife and two young children and makes several attempts to help Apple. The movie does a great job at giving all the characters dimension. We see Hudgens, Fraser and Dawson’s characters make terrible choices trying to do the right thing. In the end, Apple finds a family that she is truly a part of – even if they’re not blood. I prefer The Frozen Ground as a movie, but this is still a worthwhile watch and a great drama. Vanessa Hudgens is spectacular here.
