Minions – Movie Review

MinionsMinions – PG
Release Date: Fri 10 Jul 2015

Minions is a prequel to the two Despicable Me films wherein the Minions search for a villain to serve in the time before meeting Gru. The Minions meet Scarlett Overkill (Sandra Bullock) in 1968 and she sends them to steal the British Crown Jewels.

Because the Minions themselves only speak in a strange combination of gibberish and half-real words, the majority of the film is based on visual jokes and storytelling. There is a bit of narration here and there, but mostly the movie asks you to pay attention to understand what is going on. This works in its favor as the weakest part of the film is Bullock’s phoned in performance. Scarlett Overkill would have been a better character with a more talented voice actor in the role.

Focusing on the Minions rather than make a third Despicable Me is a mostly successful effort with plenty of 60’s jokes and songs to entertain the parents while the stories and characters keep kids in rapt attention. It’s well worth a family trip to the theater.

Amber, Aaron and I saw it in the theater and had a discussion in the car:
